Al Ain day trip from Dubai: oasis, Jebel Hafeet, zoo and bus
Plan an Al Ain day trip from Dubai: the E201 bus or a 90-minute drive, Al Ain Oasis, Jebel Hafeet, the zoo, Al Jahili Fort and the camel market, with hours.

In short
- Al Ain is an inland city in Abu Dhabi emirate, near the Oman border. Visit Abu Dhabi puts the drive from Dubai at 1.5 to 2 hours.
- RTA’s E201 bus runs from Al Ghubaiba in Bur Dubai to Al Ain Central Bus Station in about 2 hours 15 minutes, for AED 30 each way.
- Al Ain Oasis, part of the UNESCO-listed Cultural Sites of Al Ain, and Al Jahili Fort are both free to enter and open from 9am to 7pm.
- Al Ain Zoo charges AED 31.50 for adults and AED 10.50 for children aged 3 to 12, and under-3s go free, on its official FAQ checked on 2 November 2026.
- Jebel Hafeet, Abu Dhabi’s highest peak at 1,249 metres, is the place for sunset. Go between October and March, when the days are cooler.

Al Ain is the inland city of Abu Dhabi emirate, near the border with Oman, and Visit Abu Dhabi calls it the Green City for its palm groves. In one day you can walk the palm groves of a UNESCO-listed oasis, explore a 19th-century mud-brick fort, see Arabian oryx at the zoo and drive up Jebel Hafeet for sunset. It’s further than Abu Dhabi or Hatta, so start early and pick three or four stops.
How do you get from Dubai to Al Ain?
Drive in about 1.5 to 2 hours, or take RTA’s direct E201 bus from Al Ghubaiba in Bur Dubai for AED 30. Visit Abu Dhabi gives the drive time on the E66 highway, and RTA’s journey planner gives the bus times.
| Option | Leaves from | Time each way | Cost | Good for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| E201 bus | Al Ghubaiba bus station, Bur Dubai | About 2 hr 15 min | AED 30 | Solo travellers and couples on a budget |
| Car | Your hotel | About 1.5 to 2 hours | Fuel | Families, and anyone going up Jebel Hafeet |
| Tour | Your hotel | Included | Varies by operator | Visitors who’d rather not drive |
Bus times and fares from RTA’s journey planner, checked 2 November 2026.
The E201 ends at Al Ain Central Bus Station, which RTA’s planner places in the Al Ain Oasis district, so the oasis makes a natural first stop. Going home, the return journey planner showed evening buses from Al Ain at 7.55pm, 9.50pm, 10.45pm and 11.45pm, which leaves time for a sunset on the mountain. Etihad Rail’s new passenger trains don’t help here: none of the 11 stations on Visit Abu Dhabi’s Etihad Rail page is in Al Ain.
The sights are spread out. The camel market is about 15 km from downtown and Jebel Hafeet is a drive in its own right, so without a car you’ll need taxis between them. Our guide to getting around Dubai covers the Nol card and the metro to reach Al Ghubaiba.
What is there to see in Al Ain?

Al Ain Oasis
Al Ain Oasis is the heart of the UNESCO-listed Cultural Sites of Al Ain and the largest of its six oases. Shaded paths run between walled plots of more than 147,000 date palms, of over 100 varieties, watered by the old falaj channels. Entry is free from 9am to 7pm. Visit Abu Dhabi suggests starting at the free Eco-Centre, which tells the oasis’s history, and says bicycles and electric buggies are for hire at the entrance. Don’t expect running water in every channel: depending on the season, some run dry.
Al Jahili Fort
Al Jahili Fort is one of the largest forts in the UAE, built between 1891 and 1898 for Sheikh Zayed bin Khalifa Al Nahyan, Zayed the First, as a summer residence and a show of power. The Abu Dhabi Culture page lists it as free to enter, from 9am to 7pm, with free guided tours. After restoration in 2007 and 2008 it gained a permanent exhibition on the explorer and photographer Wilfred Thesiger. The round four-storey tower is the photo.
Al Ain Zoo
Al Ain Zoo has more than 4,000 animals, according to Visit Abu Dhabi, and is known for its Arabian oryx, giraffe feeding and big cats. The zoo’s FAQ lists adult entry at AED 31.50 and children aged 3 to 12 at AED 10.50, with under-3s free and people of determination free with one companion. The Safari Truck tour is AED 210 per person. You can bring your own food to the picnic areas. Its plan your visit page showed 9am to 7pm on 2 November 2026, and the zoo says closing times change by season.
Jebel Hafeet and Green Mubazzarah
Jebel Hafeet (Visit Abu Dhabi spells it Jebel Hafit) rises to 1,249 metres, the highest point in Abu Dhabi emirate and the second highest in the UAE, according to Visit Abu Dhabi. The National describes the road up as 11.7 km with 21 turns, with two lanes climbing and one coming down. Go for sunset: Visit Abu Dhabi singles out sunrise and sunset for the views over Al Ain.
At the foot of the mountain, Green Mubazzarah Park has lawns, picnic spots and warm springs that flow from the mountain, with no ticket to enter. Jebel Hafit Desert Park, along the base, has hiking and mountain-bike trails, horse and camel rides, and the 5,000-year-old Jebel Hafit Tombs, part of the more than 500 ancient tombs on the mountain.
The camel market
The Al Ain camel market is a working livestock market on Zayed Bin Sultan Street, about 15 km from downtown. Visit Al Ain lists it as open daily from 6am to 7pm, and Visit Abu Dhabi says visits must be planned ahead and supervised by market staff, so call +971 3 784 0185 before you go. Trading is busiest in the morning. Dress modestly and don’t touch the camels without permission. If you want to ride a camel rather than watch them traded, our camel ride guide covers the options closer to Dubai.
What does a one-day Al Ain plan look like?
Start early, see the oasis and the fort in the morning, the zoo after lunch, and end on Jebel Hafeet. This plan works by car or by bus and taxi:
- Leave Dubai by 7.30am by car, or check RTA’s journey planner for a morning E201 from Al Ghubaiba.
- Walk Al Ain Oasis from its 9am opening, starting at the Eco-Centre.
- Visit Al Jahili Fort and the Thesiger exhibition before lunch.
- Spend the afternoon at Al Ain Zoo, or swap it for the camel market if you’ve arranged a visit.
- Drive up Jebel Hafeet in the late afternoon for sunset, stopping at Green Mubazzarah on the way down.
- Head back to Dubai after dark; the last E201 we saw left Al Ain at 11.45pm.
With children, give the zoo more time and drop the fort. With a car and an interest in history, add Qasr Al Muwaiji, which Visit Abu Dhabi lists among the city’s heritage sites.
When is the best time to visit Al Ain?
October to March, when Visit Abu Dhabi says the cooler days suit being outdoors. From April to September the days are hotter, and Visit Abu Dhabi points visitors to the shade of the oasis palms, the water rides at Al Ain Adventure and the city’s museums. In summer, save the zoo and the mountain for the late afternoon. Our guide to the best time to visit Dubai has the month-by-month weather.
Should you go on your own or on a tour?
Go on your own if you can drive: Al Ain is a straightforward run on the E66, the main sights are free or cheap, and a car makes Jebel Hafeet easy. By bus it works well for the oasis, the fort and the zoo, but the camel market and the mountain mean taxis. A tour suits families who’d rather not spend three or four hours at the wheel in a day.
Yalla Dunes doesn’t run Al Ain trips. If you’d rather spend your day out on Abu Dhabi’s sights, the full-day Abu Dhabi city tour picks up from Dubai at 9am. If camels and sand are what you’re after, a morning desert safari includes a camel ride and is back by late morning. The day trips from Dubai hub compares Al Ain with Abu Dhabi and Hatta.

Questions
How far is Al Ain from Dubai?
Visit Abu Dhabi says the drive from Dubai takes about 1.5 to 2 hours on the E66 highway. By public transport, RTA’s E201 bus from Al Ghubaiba bus station in Bur Dubai took about 2 hours 15 minutes to Al Ain Central Bus Station when we checked on 2 November 2026, and cost AED 30 each way. Allow longer at rush hour in either direction.
Is there a bus from Dubai to Al Ain?
Yes. RTA’s E201 runs direct from Al Ghubaiba bus station to Al Ain Central Bus Station, with no changes, for AED 30. On RTA’s journey planner on 2 November 2026 the trip took about 2 hours 15 minutes, and evening buses back to Dubai left Al Ain at 7.55pm, 9.50pm, 10.45pm and 11.45pm. Al Ain has no Etihad Rail station, so it’s the bus or a car.
Is Al Ain Oasis free to visit?
Yes. Abu Dhabi’s Department of Culture and Tourism lists free entry and opening hours of 9am to 7pm, with guided tours at a charge. The oasis has more than 147,000 date palms of over 100 varieties, watered by falaj channels, and its Eco-Centre is free too. Visit Abu Dhabi suggests allowing up to two hours, and you can hire a bicycle or an electric buggy at the entrance.
How much are Al Ain Zoo tickets?
Al Ain Zoo’s FAQ lists entry at AED 31.50 for adults and AED 10.50 for children aged 3 to 12, with under-3s free. People of determination go free with one companion. The Safari Truck tour costs AED 210 per person on top. The zoo showed opening hours of 9am to 7pm on 2 November 2026 and says closing times vary by season, so check its calendar for your date.
Can you visit the Al Ain camel market?
Yes, but plan it. Visit Al Ain lists the market as open daily from 6am to 7pm, and Visit Abu Dhabi says visits must be planned in advance and supervised by market staff, so call ahead on +971 3 784 0185. It sits on Zayed Bin Sultan Street about 15 km from downtown, and trading is busiest in the morning. Don’t touch the camels without permission, and dress modestly.
Is Al Ain worth a day trip from Dubai?
Yes, if you like heritage, palm groves and mountain views more than malls. Al Ain Oasis and Al Jahili Fort are free, Visit Abu Dhabi calls the zoo the largest in the region, and Jebel Hafeet is the highest viewpoint in Abu Dhabi emirate. The catch is distance: allow three to five hours of travel in total, and keep the day to three or four stops. Between October and March it’s at its best.
