Is Abu Dhabi worth a day trip from Dubai?

Yes, if you keep it to two or three sights. The Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque is the reason most people go, and the Louvre Abu Dhabi, Qasr Al Watan and Yas Island are close behind. RTA’s journey planner showed the E101 at about 1 hour 45 minutes for AED 25. Book the mosque ahead, and remember it closes to visitors over Friday prayers, from 11.30am to 2.30pm, according to its official hours.

The Abu Dhabi day trip guide has two one-day plans, and the Grand Mosque guide covers the new entry fee, booking and dress code. For Yas Island’s theme parks, the Ferrari World guide has ticket prices, opening hours and the free shuttle from Dubai. If you’d rather not handle the transfers, the full-day Abu Dhabi city tour picks up from Dubai.

Is Hatta a good day trip from Dubai?

Yes, from October to early May. Hatta is Dubai’s mountain town, about 90 minutes away, with kayaks on the dam lake, marked hiking trails, Hatta Wadi Hub’s adventure activities and a free heritage village. RTA’s H02 Hatta Express runs from Dubai Mall about every two hours between 7am and 7pm, for AED 25. The Hatta day trip guide has the kayak prices, the bus details and a note on the Oman border nearby.

Is the desert a day trip?

It’s the shortest trip out of Dubai and fits into half a day. The Lahbab dunes are about 45 minutes from the city. A morning safari has you back at your hotel by late morning, and an evening safari runs about six hours through sunset and dinner. The desert safari guide compares the options, and Dubai or Abu Dhabi desert safari helps if you’re splitting your stay.

What about Sharjah and Al Ain?

Sharjah is next door and suits a museum morning; Al Ain is a longer trip for the oasis and the mountain. To Sharjah, the journey planner showed the direct E303 from Union at 1 hour 20 minutes in evening traffic (AED 12), and the metro plus the E307 from Deira City Centre a little quicker.

Al Ain is in Abu Dhabi emirate, near the Oman border. Visit Abu Dhabi puts the drive from Dubai at 1.5 to 2 hours and highlights the UNESCO-listed Al Ain Oasis, Jebel Hafit and Al Ain Zoo, with October to March as the cooler season. The E201 bus from Al Ghubaiba took about 2 hours 15 minutes for AED 30. The Al Ain day trip guide has the sights’ hours and prices and a one-day plan.

Can you do a day trip to Musandam from Dubai?

You can, but Musandam is part of Oman, so you cross an international border. Gulf News lists the crossings: Al Darah through Ras Al Khaimah towards Khasab, and Dibba through Fujairah. Take your passport. Oman’s Foreign Ministry says citizens of more than 100 countries can visit for up to 14 days without a visa if they meet its conditions, and everyone else needs an eVisa from Royal Oman Police. If you plan to drive, check first that your rental company allows the car into Oman.

Questions

What is the best day trip from Dubai?

For most first-time visitors it is Abu Dhabi, for the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque plus the Louvre Abu Dhabi or Qasr Al Watan. If you have seen Abu Dhabi or want the outdoors, Hatta’s dam lake and mountain trails are the better day between October and May. If you only have half a day, a desert safari is the shortest trip out of the city.

Can you do day trips from Dubai by public transport?

Yes, to Abu Dhabi, Hatta, Sharjah and Al Ain. RTA runs the E101 and E100 to Abu Dhabi, the H02 Hatta Express from Dubai Mall, the E303 and E307 to Sharjah, and the E201 to Al Ain. Once you arrive, you’ll need taxis or local buses between sights. The desert and Musandam aren’t served by public buses, so those need a tour or a car.

Can you do Abu Dhabi and the desert on the same day?

It’s a very long day and not one we’d suggest. A full Abu Dhabi day from Dubai uses up the morning and afternoon, and an evening desert safari starts with a mid-afternoon pickup. Do them on separate days, or stay a night in Abu Dhabi and take an Abu Dhabi safari from there.

Do you need a visa for a day trip to Musandam?

It depends on your passport. Musandam is part of Oman, so you cross an international border. Oman’s Foreign Ministry says citizens of more than 100 countries can stay up to 14 days without a visa if they meet its conditions, including a passport valid for six months and health insurance. Others apply for an eVisa through Royal Oman Police before travelling.
