Dune buggy or quad bike in Dubai: which should you choose?
Dune buggy or quad bike in Dubai? Seats, control, power, age rules and November 2026 prices from real listings, plus where they ride and who should pick which.

In short
- A quad bike carries one rider steering with handlebars; a dune buggy has a steering wheel, a roll cage and harnesses, and seats one, two or four.
- Operators let drivers start younger on quads, from 12 at Arabian Adventures, while buggy drivers must be 16 and passengers at least 5 at the operators checked.
- In listings checked on 2 November 2026, a 30-minute quad ride cost AED 150 to 500 and an hour on a quad AED 390 to 715.
- A two-seat buggy cost AED 900 to 1,750 an hour for the whole buggy, so two people sharing pay roughly what each would pay for an hour on a quad.
- Most rides are in the red dunes at Lahbab, about 45 minutes’ drive from Downtown Dubai, or at Al Badayer on the Dubai to Hatta road.

What is the difference between a dune buggy and a quad bike?
A quad bike is a four-wheeled motorbike for one rider, steered with handlebars; a dune buggy is a small open car with a steering wheel, a roll cage and harness belts, for one to four people. The quad feels more physical and closer to the sand. The buggy is more powerful, more stable and easier for anyone who already drives a car.
| Quad bike | Dune buggy | |
|---|---|---|
| Seats | One rider | One, two or four |
| How you steer | Handlebars and a thumb throttle; you lean your weight on slopes | Steering wheel and pedals, like a car |
| What protects you | Helmet, goggles and gloves | A roll cage and harness belts, plus a helmet and goggles |
| Engines in the listings | 50cc to 700cc | Mostly 1,000cc, plus more powerful turbo models |
| Youngest driver | 12 at Arabian Adventures; from 5 on small bikes at some operators | 16; 18 for high-performance models at Beno |
| Passengers | Arabian Adventures sells its quads for single riders | From age 5, with an adult |
| How it feels | Physical and hands-on; tiring after an hour | Fast and smooth; easy to share |
Age rules are each operator’s own, from the Arabian Adventures quad page, the Arabian Adventures buggy page and Beno, checked 2 November 2026.
Which is safer, a dune buggy or a quad bike?
A buggy gives you more protection, because the roll cage and harness hold you in if it tips, while a quad rider has only a helmet and their own balance. Neither is risk-free and both are rough on the body; riding at the guide’s pace matters as much as the vehicle you choose.
Operators turn away the same people for both. Desert Buggy Rental says riding is not suitable in pregnancy, with serious back, neck or heart problems, or after recent surgery. Beno and Friends Car Rental give similar warnings.
Read the waiver before you sign it. Friends Car Rental makes riders sign a no-liability agreement and holds them responsible for damage to the bike and for their own injuries. For how the bumpy part of a safari compares, see is dune bashing safe.
How much does a dune buggy or quad bike cost in Dubai?
A 30-minute quad ride cost AED 150 to 500 and an hour AED 390 to 715 in November 2026 listings, while a two-seat buggy cost AED 900 to 1,750 an hour for the whole buggy. Engine size, the brand of buggy and whether a hotel transfer is included explain most of the gap.

Checked 2 November 2026 on Friends Car Rental, Arabian Adventures, Beno and Desert Buggy Rental.
Compare like with like. Friends Car Rental includes hotel pickup and Arabian Adventures a shared transfer from Dubai, while Desert Buggy Rental charges extra for pickup from central Dubai. Buggy prices are usually per vehicle: at AED 900 an hour, two people sharing a Polaris pay AED 450 each, which sits inside the AED 390 to 715 range for an hour on a quad.
Do you need a licence, and how old do you have to be?
None of the operators we checked asks tourists for a driving licence for a guided ride, but there are minimum ages and you need ID. Friends Car Rental says plainly that no licence is needed for a quad session, and the others don’t mention one.
The age limits vary:
- Quads: 12 at Arabian Adventures. Friends Car Rental puts children from 5 on low-powered 90cc bikes and allows riders from 10 on 350 to 400cc quads.
- Buggy drivers: 16 at Arabian Adventures and Beno, and 18 for Beno’s high-performance models. Beno asks for a parent’s signed consent for drivers under 18.
- Buggy passengers: 5 and over, riding with an adult. Beno does not allow under-fives.
Bring a passport or Emirates ID: Arabian Adventures asks for proof of age.
Where do dune buggies and quad bikes ride in Dubai?
Most rides happen in the red dunes at Lahbab, about 45 minutes’ drive from Downtown Dubai according to Desert Buggy Rental, or at Al Badayer along the Dubai to Hatta road, which Gulf News described in June 2026 as a base for quads, Polaris and Can-Am buggies and kids’ 70cc quads.
You don’t roam freely. Riders follow a lead guide in a convoy on a set route. Beno says its rides are 45 to 60 minutes’ drive from central Dubai and recommends 7am to 10am or 4pm to 6pm to avoid the worst of the heat, with October to April the most comfortable months.
What should you wear for a buggy or quad ride?
Wear closed shoes, light clothes that cover your legs and shoulders, and sunglasses for the drive out. Helmets and goggles are provided, and Arabian Adventures adds gloves. Friends Car Rental also suggests a sun hat and sunscreen and advises leaving jewellery at your hotel.
Sand gets everywhere, so wear something you don’t mind washing twice and bring a scarf or buff for your face. Our what to wear on a desert safari guide covers the rest.
Who should pick a buggy, and who should pick a quad?
Pick a quad if you are riding alone, want to feel the machine under you, or are a teenager between 12 and 15, who can ride a quad but cannot drive a buggy. A 30-minute quad ride is also the smallest outlay if you want to drive yourself.
Pick a buggy if you are a couple or friends who want to share, if you are bringing children aged 5 or over as passengers, or if you want speed with a cage around you. A four-seat buggy suits a family with one adult driving.
Skip both if anyone is pregnant or has a bad back, neck or heart, and mention it to any safari operator when you book. The morning, evening or overnight safari guide explains the other ways to see the dunes.
Booking a guided buggy or quad ride
Yalla Dunes sells three rides run by Khat Tours, each with hotel pickup. On the dune buggy tour you drive a Polaris or Can-Am buggy yourself behind a lead guide, two riders to a buggy, with helmets, goggles, a safety briefing and water and energy drinks; it takes about three hours with the transfer.
The quad bike tour gives each rider an hour on their own quad, with a lead guide, a mechanic and a safety vehicle, and pickups at 8am or 3pm. For a mix, the morning safari with quad bike puts your group in its own Land Cruiser for a morning in the dunes with a quad ride before the heat. The tour card below shows current prices. For everything else the desert offers, start with the desert safari guide.

Questions
Is a dune buggy or a quad bike better for beginners?
A dune buggy is usually easier for a first-timer who drives a car, because it has a steering wheel, pedals, a roll cage and harness belts. A quad takes more balance and effort, since you steer with handlebars and shift your weight on slopes. Quads come in smaller engine sizes, though, so a nervous rider can start on a gentler bike.
Do you need a driving licence for a dune buggy or quad bike in Dubai?
Not for a guided ride with the operators we checked in November 2026. Friends Car Rental states that you don’t need a licence for a quad session, and none of the others mentions one. You do need ID: Arabian Adventures asks riders to bring proof of age. Self-drive rentals without a guide may have different rules, so ask first.
What is the minimum age for quad biking in Dubai?
It depends on the operator and the size of the bike. Arabian Adventures sets 12 as the minimum age for its quads. Friends Car Rental puts children from 5 on small 90cc bikes and lets riders from 10 take a 350 to 400cc quad. For dune buggies the usual minimum is 16 to drive and 5 to ride as a passenger.
How much is a dune buggy in Dubai?
In listings checked on 2 November 2026, a two-seat Polaris RZR cost AED 900 an hour at Desert Buggy Rental and AED 1,434 at Arabian Adventures, which includes a shared transfer. A Can-Am two-seater cost AED 1,499 to 1,750 an hour, and a four-seat Polaris AED 1,200. Prices are for the buggy, so sharing halves the cost per person.
Can you ride a dune buggy or quad bike when pregnant?
No. Desert Buggy Rental says riding is not suitable in pregnancy or with serious back, neck or heart problems or after recent surgery, and Beno and Friends Car Rental give similar advice. Both vehicles bounce hard over the dunes. Tell the operator about any health condition before you book.
Where do you ride dune buggies and quad bikes in Dubai?
Mostly in the red dunes at Lahbab, about 45 minutes’ drive from Downtown Dubai, and at Al Badayer, along the Dubai to Hatta road. You ride in a convoy behind a lead guide on a set route, not freely across the desert. Most operators collect you from your hotel or charge extra for a transfer.
