Desert safari in Dubai: what to know before you book
How a Dubai desert safari works in 2026: evening, morning and overnight trips, shared or private, where they go, what happens and how to choose one.

In short
- A Dubai desert safari is a trip by 4x4 from your hotel into the dunes outside the city, with dune bashing, sandboarding, a camel ride and, in the evening, dinner at a desert camp.
- Evening safaris are the classic choice, morning safaris are shorter and cooler, and overnight safaris add a night at a camp and a desert sunrise.
- Shared safaris put you in a 4x4 with other travellers and cost less per person; private safaris give your group its own vehicle, driver and pace.
- Most safaris from Dubai head to the red dunes around Lahbab, Al Aweer and Margham, or to the protected Dubai Desert Conservation Reserve.
- Operators tell pregnant women and people with back, neck or heart problems not to go dune bashing, and set their own minimum ages for children.
What is a desert safari in Dubai?
A desert safari is a half-day or overnight trip from your hotel into the sand dunes outside Dubai, in a 4x4 with a trained driver. The core of it is dune bashing: a fast, rolling drive up and down the dunes. Most trips add sandboarding, a short camel ride and a sunset photo stop, and evening trips finish with dinner and shows at a desert camp.
Visit Dubai calls the desert safari one of the most Dubai things you can do, and the market reflects that: GetYourGuide’s Dubai desert safari page listed 153 trips on 2 November 2026. In Dubai, safari companies must register their drivers and vehicles with the Department of Economy and Tourism (DET), with an RTA off-road permit for each driver and an RTA inspection for each vehicle.
What kinds of desert safari can you book?
There are three main timings and two ways to travel. The timing decides the temperature, the light and whether you get dinner; the way you travel decides the price and how much control you have.
- Evening safari. Pickup in the early afternoon, dune bashing, sunset in the dunes, then a camp dinner with shows. The classic first trip.
- Morning safari. Pickup from about 7 AM and back three to four hours later. Cooler and shorter, with no camp dinner.
- Overnight safari. An evening safari plus a night in a tent at the camp, stargazing and a sunrise camel ride.
- Shared or private. On a shared trip you fill a 4x4 with other travellers; on a private one the car, the driver and the timing are yours.
The morning, evening or overnight guide compares the three side by side, and the desert safari price guide shows what each costs in November 2026.
Where do Dubai desert safaris go?
Most safaris from Dubai drive to the red dunes south-east of the city, around Lahbab, Al Aweer and Margham. These are the three areas Dubai Police named when it ran a safety campaign for desert tour drivers, and the busiest trips on GetYourGuide list Lahbab’s “Red Dunes” in their itineraries.
The Dubai Desert Conservation Reserve is the other main destination. It covers 225 square kilometres, almost 5% of the emirate, and has been protected since 2003, according to IUCN. It is home to free-roaming Arabian oryx, and operators such as Arabian Adventures and Platinum Heritage run dune and wildlife drives there. Some heritage trips go to Al Marmoom, off the Al Ain road. Check where a trip actually goes before you book: GetYourGuide’s Dubai desert safari page also lists trips based in Sharjah.
What happens on a typical evening safari?
A driver collects you from your hotel in a 4x4 in the early afternoon. After about 45 minutes on the road, you stop at the edge of the desert while the driver adjusts the tyre pressure for the sand. Then comes 30 to 45 minutes of dune bashing, a sunset stop, sandboarding and a camel ride. The camel ride is usually a few minutes; for a longer trek or a falcon show, see the camel ride guide.
At the camp you get Arabic coffee and dates, henna painting, a BBQ buffet and a programme of shows that can include Tanoura, fire and belly dancing. You are back at your hotel six to seven hours after pickup. Read whether dune bashing is safe before you go, and what to wear for the season.
How do you choose the right desert safari?
Start with who is going and when, then pick the timing and the vehicle.
- Travelling with small children? A morning trip or a private evening trip with a car seat works better. The desert safari with kids guide covers ages and seat rules.
- Visiting between May and September? Choose a morning safari, or an evening one that reaches the dunes near sunset.
- Want the camp and the shows? Book an evening safari, or an overnight one to see the desert after the crowds leave.
- Want to drive yourself? Add a quad bike or book a buggy tour. The dune buggy or quad bike guide explains the difference.
- Staying in Abu Dhabi? Its desert is closer to you. Compare the two in Dubai or Abu Dhabi desert safari.
A shared safari is the cheaper way to see the desert, and for a couple on a budget it is a sound choice. Yalla Dunes only runs private trips, in a Land Cruiser for up to six with hotel pickup, as a private evening safari, a kids-friendly safari or a morning safari.

Questions
How long does a desert safari in Dubai take?
An evening safari with dinner usually takes six to seven hours door to door, and a shorter version without dinner about four hours. Morning safaris run three to four hours. Overnight safaris last around 17 hours, from mid-afternoon pickup to drop-off after breakfast. The dune bashing itself lasts 30 to 45 minutes on the listings we checked, and the drive to the dunes about 45 minutes each way.
How far is the desert from Dubai city?
The dunes most safaris use are about 45 minutes’ drive from central Dubai, according to the itineraries operators publish on GetYourGuide. Trips stop on the edge of the desert to adjust the tyre pressure before the dune drive. Trips into the Dubai Desert Conservation Reserve, such as those run by Arabian Adventures, enter through Margham Gate.
Can you do a desert safari during Ramadan?
Yes. Safaris run during Ramadan, but the evening programme can change. Arabian Adventures says belly dancing is not performed during Ramadan, and Excursion Point warns that entertainment may change during religious holidays or because of official restrictions. Ask the operator what its Ramadan evening includes before you book, and plan for quieter shows than at other times of year.
Who should not go on a desert safari?
Operators say pregnant women and people with back, neck or heart problems should not go dune bashing, and most bar the youngest children: one sets the limit at 2 years, others at 3 or 5. You can still see the desert without the dune drive, on a camel ride, a wildlife drive in the conservation reserve or a hot air balloon flight.
