In short

  • An evening safari is the classic choice: pickup around 2:00 to 3:30 PM, dune bashing, sunset in the dunes, then dinner and shows at a camp, back about six to seven hours later.
  • A morning safari takes three to four hours with pickup from about 7 AM: dune bashing, sandboarding and often a camel ride while it is cooler, but no camp dinner or shows.
  • An overnight safari adds a night in a tent at the camp, stargazing and a sunrise camel ride, and lasts about 17 hours.
  • In mid-November the sun rises in Dubai at about 6:35 AM and sets at about 5:30 PM; in mid-June it rises at 5:28 AM and sets at 7:10 PM.
  • Mornings suit hot months, small children and busy itineraries; evenings suit first-timers who want the camp; overnight suits people who want the desert after the crowds leave.

What is the difference between a morning and an evening desert safari?

A morning safari is a short, cooler trip for the dune drive and sandboarding, back before lunch; an evening safari is a longer trip that adds sunset in the dunes and dinner with shows at a camp. An overnight safari is an evening safari that keeps going: you sleep at the camp and wake up for sunrise.

What time is sunrise and sunset in the Dubai desert?

Sunset in Dubai falls between about 5:30 PM in late autumn and 7:10 PM in midsummer, and sunrise between about 7:06 AM in January and 5:28 AM in June. Operators move their pickups with the light: OceanAir says its pickups run about an hour earlier in the morning and an hour later in the afternoon in summer.

In November an evening pickup at 3:00 PM reaches the dunes in good time for a 5:30 PM sunset. A sunrise trip needs a pickup at least an hour before sunrise, to allow for the 45-minute drive and the tyre stop.

Which is cooler, a morning or an evening desert safari?

A morning safari is the cooler choice for most of the year, because you are in the dunes before the sand and air heat up. An evening safari starts in the heat of the afternoon and cools down only once the sun has set.

The difference matters most from May to September. According to the National Centre of Meteorology (NCM), August’s average highs across the UAE are 40.9 to 43.2°C and the average lows 29.3 to 31°C, as reported by Gulf News. Even early mornings are warm then, but you avoid the afternoon peak.

From November to March the picture flips. November’s average highs are 29 to 32.1°C and lows 18.8 to 21.5°C (NCM via Gulf News), and January’s lows are 11.6 to 15.2°C (NCM via Aletihad). Visit Dubai warns that the open desert gets cold on winter evenings, so bring a warm layer. The what to wear guide covers each season.

What do you do on a morning desert safari?

A morning safari covers the dune drive, a photo stop and sandboarding, and many add a short camel ride. You do not visit a camp for dinner or shows, and breakfast is only included on some trips.

On DesertFun’s Lahbab morning trip, for example, you get a 35-minute dune drive in a Land Cruiser, a photo stop on a high dune and sandboarding, with a quad bike or camel ride as paid options. Odyssey DMC’s sunrise trip goes towards Al Qudra instead, with a dune drive, a picnic breakfast and a stop at an Arabian oryx feeding station.

The low morning sun throws long shadows across the ripples in the sand, which makes for good photos. If you want to drive yourself, a morning quad or buggy tour fits into the same slot; see the dune buggy or quad bike guide.

What happens on an evening desert safari?

An evening safari adds the sunset and the camp to the dune drive. After pickup in the early afternoon and about 45 minutes on the road, you stop to adjust the tyre pressure, then go dune bashing, sandboard and stop on a dune for sunset photos.

At the camp you get Arabic coffee and dates, a camel ride, henna painting and a BBQ buffet with vegetarian dishes, followed by shows. Excursion Point’s camp has a Tanoura and fire show; OceanAir’s Al Khayma camp adds a falconry show and a horse show. Arabian Adventures notes that belly dancing is not performed during Ramadan, and sandboarding depends on the weather. You are back at your hotel six to seven hours after pickup, which is late for small children.

Is an overnight desert safari worth it?

An overnight safari is worth it if you want to see the desert after the day visitors leave: a quiet night, a dark sky and the sunrise. It is not worth it if you only want the dune drive, because the evening programme is the same and you pay about three to four times as much as a shared evening trip.

OceanAir’s overnight trip runs about 17 hours. After the evening programme at Al Khayma camp you get a stargazing session with a telescope, a campfire, a night in a private air-conditioned tent with showers and towels, a sunrise camel ride and an Arabic breakfast. It lists the trip as unsuitable for children under 3, pregnant women and people with back problems, and asks for a passport or ID copy.

Pack a warm layer between November and March, a torch or phone light, and a small overnight bag, since luggage and large bags are not allowed on the trips we checked.

Which safari suits kids, couples and first-timers?

  • Families with babies or toddlers. A morning safari: cooler, shorter and back before nap time. Read the desert safari with kids guide for ages and car seats.
  • First-time visitors. An evening safari, to get the sunset, the camp and the shows in one trip.
  • Couples. An evening safari for the sunset, or an overnight stay for the stars.
  • Summer visitors. A morning safari, or an evening one that reaches the dunes close to sunset.
  • Anyone on a tight budget. A shared morning trip costs the least; the price guide has the figures.

Yalla Dunes runs a three-hour private morning safari with pickup at 7:30 to 8:00 AM, a six-hour private evening safari with pickup at 3:00 to 3:30 PM, and a morning safari with a quad bike. We do not run overnight trips, so for a night in the dunes book a specialist camp operator.

Questions

Is a morning or evening desert safari better in Dubai?

An evening safari is better if you want the full programme: sunset in the dunes, a camp dinner and live shows. A morning safari is better if it is hot, if you have small children, or if you want the dune drive without a late night. If you have done an evening safari before, a morning one shows you the dunes in a different light.

What time does a morning desert safari start in Dubai?

The shared morning safaris we checked offered pickups from 7:00 AM, with later slots up to 10:00 AM, and some private and sunrise trips leave earlier: one private listing offered pickups from 5:00 AM. OceanAir Travels says its morning pickups move about an hour earlier in summer. You are usually back at your hotel by late morning, three to four hours after pickup.

Do you see the sunset on an evening desert safari?

Yes, on most evening trips. Operators time the pickup, usually between 2:00 and 3:30 PM in November, so that you reach the dunes before the sun goes down at about 5:30 PM, then stop on a dune for photos. In summer the sun sets after 7 PM, and OceanAir moves its afternoon pickups about an hour later.

Is an overnight desert safari safe?

Yes, with a licensed operator at an established camp. OceanAir’s overnight package, for example, includes a night desert guide, showers and an air-conditioned tent at its camp, and asks tourists for a passport copy. The dune drive carries the same health limits as any safari, so it lists the trip as unsuitable for pregnant women and people with back problems. Pack a warm layer for winter nights.

Is a morning desert safari worth it without the dinner?

Yes, if the dune drive and sandboarding are what you came for. A morning trip gives you the same 30 to 45 minutes of dune bashing in cooler air and low light for photos, and it costs less because there is no camp. You miss the dinner, the shows and the sunset, so pick an evening trip if those matter more.
