Adventures in Dubai: skydiving, flights, ziplines and dunes

Dubai’s adventures sit in three places: the coast at Dubai Marina and the Palm, the desert east of the city, and the Hajar Mountains at Jebel Jais in Ras Al Khaimah, about two hours’ drive north.

What adventure activities can you do in Dubai?

The main adventure activities in Dubai are a tandem skydive, a helicopter tour, a sunrise balloon flight, the XLine zipline, jet skis and flyboards, dune buggies and quad bikes, and a desert safari, with the Jebel Jais ziplines a day trip away.

Which adventure should you choose?

Choose by the kind of thrill you want and who is with you.

In the air. A skydive is the biggest rush; the Skydive Dubai price guide compares the Palm and desert drop zones and the weight limits. A helicopter tour gives the view without the jump, and on HeliDubai a private flight for five costs the same as five shared seats. A hot air balloon is the slow, quiet option at sunrise.

On a wire. XLine runs 1 km across Dubai Marina from 170 m up, lying face down, and is open daily from 10am to 12:20pm and 2pm to 5pm. At Jebel Jais, Jais Flight is 2.83 km long and the Jais Sky Tour links six ziplines; the Jais Sledder toboggan was temporarily closed when we checked.

On the water. Guided jet ski rides run from Umm Suqeim’s Fishing Harbour to Burj Al Arab and back. The jet ski guide covers routes and rules, and Dubai on the water covers boats.

When is the best season for adventures in Dubai?

October to April. Hero flies balloons daily from 1 October to 31 May, Visit Jebel Jais recommends October to April, and Skydive Dubai’s school runs over the same months. Wind is the usual cause of delays: skydives go on standby when it blows too hard and balloon flights are called off, so book these early in your trip. What limits apply to adventure activities?

Every operator sets its own rules, and most weigh you at check-in. HeliDubai caps a shared seat at 115 kg and Falcon at 110 kg, and Skydive Dubai sets BMI limits as well as weight: 90 kg for women and 100 kg for men. Hero and XLine do not take pregnant guests, and Skydive Dubai strongly advises against jumping while pregnant. Tell the operator about any health condition before you pay.
