Dubai has a reputation for being expensive, and plenty of it is. But some of its best sights cost nothing, from the fountain under Burj Khalifa to the souks, galleries and public beaches. Each item below was checked against an official page on 2 November 2026, and the last section lists the places that are often called free but are not.
What can you do in Dubai for free?
The best free things to do in Dubai are watching the Dubai Fountain, walking Al Fahidi Historical Neighbourhood and the Deira souks, swimming at the public beaches at JBR and Kite Beach, browsing the galleries of Alserkal Avenue, and seeing flamingos at Ras Al Khor Wildlife Sanctuary. Visit Dubai’s own list adds the Imagine show at Dubai Festival City Mall, The Viewing Point at Dubai Creek Harbour, the turtle lagoon at Jumeirah Al Naseem and the boardwalk on Palm Jumeirah. Getting between them is the main cost.
When are the Dubai Fountain show times?
The Dubai Fountain performs every 30 minutes from 6pm to 11pm every day, according to Burj Khalifa’s official site, and watching costs nothing. Emaar’s most recent published schedule, from October 2025, also lists two afternoon shows: 1pm and 1:30pm from Saturday to Thursday, and 2pm and 2:30pm on Fridays (Emaar). Emaar planned a second phase of upgrades for 2026, so check the afternoon times on the day.
The free viewing spots are the Waterfront Promenade at Dubai Mall, the terraces of Souk Al Bahar and Burj Park. Two closer views cost money, both sold on the At the Top booking site:
| Fountain view | Price | Hours |
|---|---|---|
| Waterfront Promenade, Souk Al Bahar, Burj Park | Free | Shows 6pm to 11pm |
| Dubai Fountain Boardwalk (floating platform) | AED 25 | 5:45pm to 10:45pm |
| Dubai Fountain Lake Ride (abra on Burj Lake) | AED 75 | 5:45pm to 10:45pm |
Checked 2 November 2026.
Is old Dubai free to visit?
Yes, almost all of it. Al Fahidi Historical Neighbourhood, by Dubai Creek, has art galleries in the rooms and courtyards of restored houses with sand-coloured wind towers, and the Coffee Museum, all free to walk into. From there, walk to the Bur Dubai abra station and cross the Creek to the Deira Old Souq, then wander the Spice Souk and Gold Souk, where window shopping costs nothing.
The abra is the one cost, and it is small. A traditional motorised abra between Bur Dubai and the Deira Old Souq costs AED 1 per person per trip, paid in cash to the boatman (RTA). Carry coins or small notes. The air-conditioned abra between Al Jaddaf and Dubai Festival City is AED 2, and a private abra charter is AED 120 an hour.
Which beaches in Dubai are free?
The public beaches are free: The Beach opposite JBR, with the city on one side and the sea on the other; Kite Beach, which has watersports, beach volleyball and its own skatepark; and Black Palace Beach, with views of Palm Jumeirah and Burj Al Arab (Visit Dubai). Most hotels have private beach clubs for their own guests.
La Mer, often listed as a free beach, has changed. Visit Dubai now lists it as J1 Beach, relaunched in October 2024 around nine restaurants and beach clubs, so check what is open to the public before you go. For a long free walk by the sea, the boardwalk on Palm Jumeirah runs 11 km around the crescent, with food trucks along the way. For what to wear once you leave the sand, see the Dubai dress code guide.
Where can you see art and culture for free?
Alserkal Avenue in Al Quoz is the first stop: galleries in converted warehouses, such as Waddington Custot and Elmarsa, which shows North African art, are free to enter. Jameel Arts Centre, on the Creek at Jaddaf Waterfront, shows contemporary work from the Middle East and South Asia. The Mohammed Bin Rashid Library, on the Creek at Al Jaddaf, is worth seeing for the building alone, shaped like a traditional lectern; book a time slot online or in its app before you go. All three are indoors, which makes them good for the middle of a hot day.
What free things can you do in Dubai at night?
After dark, Dubai’s free shows are its best value. The Dubai Fountain runs until 11pm. At Dubai Festival City Mall, Imagine combines lasers, fountains and what Visit Dubai calls the world’s largest water projection screen, every evening including weekends. The Viewing Point at Dubai Creek Harbour juts 26 metres over the water with views of the Creek and Downtown, and costs nothing. Further out, The Peninsula at Riverland Dubai, in Dubai Parks and Resorts, is free to enter and park at, and often hosts concerts and festivals.
Where can you see wildlife in Dubai for free?
Ras Al Khor Wildlife Sanctuary, 6.2 sq km of mudflats, mangroves and lagoons at the end of the Creek, has free observation points where you can watch flamingos. At Jumeirah Al Naseem, the Dubai Turtle Rehabilitation Project’s lagoon is open to the public every day with no fee or booking; the project has rescued more than 2,100 turtles since 2004. Al Qudra Lakes, about 30 minutes’ drive from the city, has around 170 bird species and a cycling track.
Between October and April, camel races take place early on weekend mornings at Al Marmoom Camel Racetrack, about half an hour from the city, and spectators can watch for free. Visit Dubai notes the setting is informal, so ask locally about race days.
What looks free in Dubai but is not?
Several places on “free Dubai” lists charge for entry. These are the prices on each attraction’s official site:
| Attraction | Price | What is free |
|---|---|---|
| Global Village | AED 25 Monday to Thursday, AED 30 any day | Under 3s, over 65s, people of determination |

How do you plan a free day in Dubai?
A day of free sights fits together well if you follow the heat:
- Morning: walk Al Fahidi and the Coffee Museum, take the AED 1 abra to Deira, and wander the Spice and Gold Souks.
- Midday: head indoors to the galleries at Alserkal Avenue or the Mohammed Bin Rashid Library.
- Late afternoon: swim at Kite Beach or The Beach opposite JBR.
- Evening: watch the Dubai Fountain from the Dubai Mall waterfront, then look at the main aquarium tank inside the mall.
The metro links most of these; see getting around Dubai for fares and routes.
If you would rather have the history explained, the half-day Dubai city tour covers old Dubai, the souks and the abra with an English-speaking guide and an air-conditioned transfer. For paid sights worth the money, see things to do in Dubai, and for days when it is too hot to be outside, indoor things to do in Dubai.

Questions
Is the Dubai Fountain free?
Yes. Watching the Dubai Fountain from the Waterfront Promenade at Dubai Mall, the Souk Al Bahar terraces or Burj Park costs nothing. Evening shows run every 30 minutes from 6pm to 11pm daily. Only the closer views cost money: the floating Dubai Fountain Boardwalk is AED 25 and the abra Lake Ride is AED 75 on the official At the Top booking site.
Is Global Village free?
No. In Season 31, which opened on 14 October 2026 and runs to May 2027, a Weekday ticket costs AED 25 for Monday to Thursday and an Any Day ticket costs AED 30, VAT included. Entry is free for children under 3, people aged 65 and over, and people of determination with valid ID. Rides and some attractions cost extra.
Are the beaches in Dubai free?
The public beaches are. Visit Dubai points to The Beach opposite JBR, Kite Beach, which has watersports, volleyball and a skatepark, and Black Palace Beach, with views of Palm Jumeirah and Burj Al Arab. Most hotel beaches are private clubs for their guests. La Mer is now listed as J1 Beach, a strip of restaurants and beach clubs, so check before you go.
Is the abra in Dubai free?
No, but it is close. The traditional motorised abra across Dubai Creek between Bur Dubai and the Deira Old Souq costs AED 1 per person per trip, paid in cash, according to RTA. The air-conditioned abra between Al Jaddaf and Dubai Festival City costs AED 2. A private abra charter costs AED 120 an hour.
Can you see Dubai Aquarium for free?
Partly. The main tank wall faces into Dubai Mall, so you can watch sand tiger sharks and rays from the mall for nothing. To walk through the 48-metre tunnel and into the Underwater Zoo you need a ticket; the Silver pass cost AED 199 on the official site when we checked on 2 November 2026.
